Wolf/cat, 9x10”, original date forgotten, printed 2023.

This image has appeared throughout my clay, but it began as this drawing.  Its inspiration was an old B&W photograph of an angry black wolf trapped behind the bars of a cage.  The wolf's expression stuck with me long past the photo did (wish I still had that photo but it was lost in one of my ritual/regular life purges.) The wolf has become more than a wolf: people recognize it as their pet cat (less often as their dog) and this delights people, which delights me.  Just as often, it's not the animal-ness that people connect with, but the emotion - so angry, so constrained in one's anger, that one's guts feel electric. (Interestingly, people’s recognition of this anger is often expressed with an outburst of laughter.)

I constantly wonder why we see what we see.  Why do certain things stick with us.  How much is the perceiver and how much is the perceived.  I wonder (it's something to Wonder not Google) why some nouns (people, places, things) go beyond viewed, to climb in through the windows of the soul. 

Archival giclée print on archival hot press smooth fine art paper, reproduced via high-resolution scans by Gango Custom Prints in Portland, Oregon.  The original drawing was created scrappily - with pencil, paint, collage, glue, mixed media, on found vintage flyleaf paper - so I’m excited to be able to share my drawings in a format that will endure.
